Largemammal is me, Kevin Mercer.

I am a freelance designer, and I work out of the second bedroom of my house. Don't let that fool you, though. I am the genuine article, an honest to goodness, award-winning, smile inducing, effective communicating, thoughtful image-making, easy going and creative designer.

Three things that I love: Color, Typography, and Texture.

Most of what I learned about color was gained by two separate encounters, one with Matisse's "Joy of Life", and an ongoing conversation with Cy Twombly's "50 Days at Ilium". In fact, I have learned more from Twombly's room at the back of the PMA than from any other piece of art, ever.

I am a nerd for typography. A well-balanced diet of hand-lettering, hand-set type from old specimen books, and digital type find their way into my work.

Texture for me is all about subtlety; creating mood, depth, and unexpected details. I like things that look lived in.

Largemammal has allowed me to stay up too late, operate a power washer indoors, eat BBQ in Austin TX, consider how to apply graphics to the bottom of a filled swimming pool, purchase a really nice engagement ring, and meet a whole bunch of interesting creative people.
